Apparently in a rush to deliver in some of the promises he made to the over 10,000 members of TAMPPAN before his emergence as its leader, the national President of the Theatre group, Dele Odule, has ensured that 10 members of the association who want to empower themselves academically have gained admission into the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU).
Courtesy of the Federal Government scheme, Project Nollywood, the fortunate 10, names withheld, have begun registration processes at the state-owned university in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
“We are determined to make the industry more attractive and viable to stakeholders, the academic empowerment of our members is one of the ways to do this’, Odule told R on Friday.
From now, not every Dick, Tom and Harry would be allowed to practice Theatre among the Yoruba actors and actresses unless such a person belongs to, at least, one of the Guilds that the executives have inaugurated recently.
The five Guilds-Guild of Directors, Guild of Producers, Guild of Arts Director, Guild of Actors and Guild of Cinematography, each with its Chairman and other assistants, are to ensure that mediocrity becomes a thing of the past, just as non-professionals will no longer have their ways in the Yoruba movie industry. “If you don’t belong in any of these groups, you won’t be able to do anything again. The days of mediocre holding sway in the industry is gone. Practitioners should be allowed to reap the benefits of their labours. However, we are ready to work with other artistry bodies in the country, except ANTP for reasons which I will not discuss anymore.
The bodies must be identifiable as we will not work with just anybody again. We need to expand because the more we do that, the more we are able to achieve our set goals and the goal is that this regime should make the industry viable for those who really want to practice. So, those who have decided to take advantage of the government’s empowerment programme, when they graduate in six months, will have been better educated about the industry and its practice. There will be another batch of beneficiaries immediately the first 10 beneficiaries are through with their studies”, Odule said.
Funke Akindele, Sunday Ogunyemi and Femi Adebayo are among the leaders of each of the Guilds.
