Wizkid ports to Glo

One of the most successful hip-hop artistes in Nigeria at the moment, Wizkid (Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun), has called it quits with MTN as he quietly signed up with Globacom.

Sky Entertainment can authoritatively inform that Wizkid signed a multi-million naira endorsement deal with Dr. Michael Adenuga’s Globacom two weeks ago.

Official confirmation was difficult to obtain at the weekend as both parties are kept the deal close to their chests. However, a source privy to the deal confirmed the development to Sunday Tribune.

The source revealed that Wizkid was almost going with MTN following intense pressure from the
telecom company, but decided to pitch tent with Globacom.

It was gathered that the hip-hop artiste had been invited to a party two and a half weeks ago by MTN. Unknown to him, it was a party for the unveiling of MTN ambassadors in Victoria Island. Wizkid’s manager was said to have picked up the information and accordingly briefed the artiste, who cleverly stayed away from the party.

Apart from being an irresistible offer, it is not impossible that nationalistic instinct might also have had a role to play in the decision of Wizkid to go for Globacom, considering that he had no disagreement with MTN while their relationship lasted.

Globacom officials at the weekend told our correspondent to await the official unveiling of the company’s ambassadors in the next few days.

Wizkid is a prodigious musical talent, having started his wave-making music career at the age of 11. He has been a resounding success as a recording artiste, songwriter and performer. He has successively released a string of club bangers and monster hits since his career began. Some of these include “Holla at Your Boy” from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), “Tease Me/Bad Guys”, “Don’t Dull”, “Love My Baby”, “Pakurumo” and “Oluwa Lo Ni”.

Some of his numerous awards include BET Award, a MOBO Award, 3 Headies Awards and two Channel O Music Video Awards.

Wizkid became the first ever Nigerian musician to have over 1 million followers on Twitter.

Efforts to get Globacom officials to officially confirm the development was not successful at the time of filing this report.
